Lerryn Class - EYFS

Miss Laing and Mrs Cotton (Tuesday) with Mrs Udy and Mrs Ferreira.

WELCOME TO LERRYN CLASS - RECEPTION

Miss Laing is our Reception class teacher, and Mrs Udy, Miss Ferreira and Mrs Vickers are our Reception class teaching assistants.  Mrs Cotton covers Miss Laing on a Tuesday for her management time as Assistant Head.

The EYFS team manage a well-organised and planned classroom, with a variety of high quality indoor and outdoor resources. We are lucky to enjoy a large outdoor area for our Reception children, in addition to our whole-school dedicated Wild Tribe outdoor learning area.

At Dobwalls, our approach to learning in the Early Years covers a mixture of child-led learning, and adult-directed activities. We allow our children to take some ownership of their own learning through our continuous provision, while also guiding their learning through more formal inputs and activities led by our skilled practitioners.  In the Early Years, our planning is flexible, and we are often guided by our children's needs and interests. We endeavour to provide opportunities to meet the needs and interests of all of our children through our weekly planning and continuous provision.

Continuous Provision

Continuous provision refers to the resources which are consistently on offer throughout the year in our Early Years classroom. These resources are carefully planned to meet the learning needs and interests of our pupils. Our children have access to high quality, well-organised resources which provide them with opportunities to revisit and extend their learning. We regularly add enhancements and provocations to our continuous provision, which act as a stimulus for new learning and ideas.

Every week, we spend learning through play in our Wild Tribe area.

Communication and Language

Communication and language are at the heart of our Early Years curriculum. Each week we have a designated focus text and nursery rhyme. This is accompanied by designated target vocabulary and key questions. We read our focus text every day to encourage in-depth discussions about the text. In addition to this, we read other stories and sing with our children each day. This ensures that our children are exposed to a wide range of vocabulary and language structures throughout their learning journey in the Early Years. Our highly skilled practitioners also extend and develop our children's language and communication through daily high-quality interactions. Our key texts for the year are mapped out in our Reading Spine, alongside other recommended reads. We also map out our focus nursery rhymes across the year.

Storytelling

Developing vocabulary is so important for young children. For example, listening to stories, making up stories, retelling stories, acting out stories, learning new words and more.

Ask your child if they can retell one of the stories below.  You could show them the pictures or prompt them with a few of the words from the texts here.

Learning to Read at Dobwalls

Learning to Read is one of our main priorities in Lerryn class.  We do this through our daily RWI sessions.  Please do support and encourage your children to read at home every night.  Little and often makes a huge difference. For more information on helping your child to read at home, click the link below.  Spend time reading and discussing stories with them as well as when they begin to use their sounds and recognise words.

Autumn 1

This half-term, our focus for learning is ‘The 3 Little Pigs’ and 'All About Me!'. We will be learning to express our emotions and feelings, and thinking about how we can be kind friends. We will be talking about our families and friends, and noticing similarities and differences between people. In phonics, we will be learning the single letter sounds, and learning to read and write simple three-sound words. In maths, we will be learning to match, sort and compare, as well as talking about measures and pattern. Please take a look at our Reception medium term plans below for more information.
